BARRIE JAMES: (1860-1937) Scottish Novelist, created Peter Pan. A good A.L.S., J M Barrie, two pages, 8vo, 23rd January 1919, to Nicholas Murray Butler. Barrie states `In answer to your cable I enclose a message for the performance on the 20th. It would be better understood by audience if read at end of play than earlier.« further referring to the invitation received from his correspondent `Please let me take this opportunity of thanking you heartily for your invitation to America. I should very much have liked to be able to accept it but had to decline because some matters tie me down here. I think a true friendship between America and this country would be the finest thing that could happen in the world.« With two ink reception stamps from University of Columbia and from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to the upper left corner. Very small overall, minor age wear. Folded. VG £150-200 Nicholas Murray Butler (1862-1947) American Philosopher and Diplomat. Awarded with the Nobel Peace prize. President of the Columbia University and President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
