SANTERRE ANTOINE JOSEPH: (1752-1809) French Brewer who participated in the Storm of the Bastille and became General and Commander of the National Guard during the French Revolution. Very popular for his generosity as owner of the Brasserie de la Magdeleine. An excellent A.L.S., `Santerre´, twice, to the heading and at the base of the letter adding beneath `Brasseur faubourg Antoine´, one page, 4to, Paris, 27th February 1795, to Goupilleau, in French. Santerre states `You know as well as I do General Nouvion, who is again displaced. It is a loss not to have well-educated officers as himself at the headquarters. I recommend him, and forward to you a letter…´ The document bears to the bottom right corner the prestigious Crawford collection stamp. EX £800-1200 Philippe Charles Aimé Goupilleau (1749-1823) Known as Goupilleau de Montaigu. French Politician, deputy of the Vendée and member of the National Convention. Related to Jean Francois Goupilleau de Fontenay (1753-1823) French notair, who is also mentioned by Santerre in the present letter. Jean-Baptiste Nouvion (1753-1825) French General who served in the Vendée and played a distinguished role alongside Brune in the French invasion of the Helvetic Confederation.
