GAMELIN MAURICE GUSTAVE : (1872-1958) French General. Although his services in World War I were considered competent, specially at the first Battle of La Marne, his further command of the French armies during WWII, and most of all in 1940 during the Battle of France, have been valued as poor, predictible and with disastrous results. A good A.L.S., `M. Gamelin´, four pages, small 4to, mourning paper, n.p., [Brasilia], 20th January 1921, to his mother, in French. Gamelin first refers to his father´s death and commiserates with his mother for the very difficult time she has been throuh, further saying `..the only remedy is the work - and there is a lot to do - not the feeling that the war is not won yet, or the peace at least, and that men of my generation will have to work a lot to reach the goal..´ Together with A.L., by Gamelin, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 4th December 1927, as Commander of the Levant troops, to an Ambassador, in French. Gamelin refers to Damas temporary installations. VG, 2 £80-100 Gamelin was appointed Commander of the French mission from 1919 to 1924. He was later appointed to Damas from 1924 to 1929.
