Gemara Tractate Brachot And Mishnayot Zera'im - Amsterdam 1752 - Polemic edition
Tractate Brachot Talmud Bavli, and Mishnayot Seder Zera'im. With the commentary of Maimonides and with the commentary of Rabbi Shimshon, and with the commentary of the Rosh.
Amsterdam, 1752. Printed by the brothers Joseph and Jacob Propes in Amsterdam.
The printing of this Shas began in the period when the Berlin and Frankfurt printing presses still had no right to print another Shas. But the first screen here, the Ashkenazi community leader in Amsterdam, writes: "Although I gave my consent to the printers, for twenty years from the date of the printing press, they changed their actions and did not fulfill their words, and a few other reasons." The main argument against the printers in Berlin and Frankfurt-Dauder was that the printing press was bad, ugly, and defective, and therefore their right was revoked. Rabbis forbade printing for twenty-five (or twenty-seven) years.
In the printing of this edition, the printers also collided with the printer from Zolzbach, who printed in the years 1754-1762 an edition of the Talmud. A wide controversy arose and several publications were printed on the subject. [See N. Rakover, The Copyright in Jewish sources, Jerusalem, 1991, p. 428-440, 386-388].
At the beginning of the tractate two printed privileges were printed by the printers from the Netherlands (in Dutch, the Second Privilege dated December 10, 1750) and a brief introduction by the printers. Apparently the privileges were not attached to all the copies.
