Handsome edition of Pushkin’s The Golden Cockerel, with illustrations by a follower of the Petersburg School. (Cf.: The Paul M. Fekula Collection. A Catalogue. New-York, 1988, vol. II, p.118).
Both Bilibin and Zworykine framed their compositions with ornamental borders filled with arabesque derived from folk art and medieval manuscript illumination. The purpose of these motifs was not only to decorate the design but also to demonstarte the beauty of these ancient arts (Cf.: Russian Book Art, 1904-2005 : A Selection from the LS Collection / documented by Albert Lemmens and Serge-Aljosja Stommels.
