Shiviti-Menorah. [Algiers / Morocco], turn of 18th-19th century.
Parchment, ink and watercolor (?), gold paint.
Shiviti-Menora which was most probably hanging in a synagogue. The leaf is very colorfully decorated with a variety of Kabbalistic texts.
A frame divides the plate into two: on the upper part are seven arches within which appear verses concerning the Menorah from the Book of Numbers: “BeHa’alotcha et HaNerot…”, in the background are stylized trees in green, red and blue.
Depicted in the center of the plate is a seven-branched Menorah in gold and brown. Inscribed with the hymn”LaMenatze’ach” (Psalm 65), commonly known for its protection virtues. The Temple’s vessels are depicted around the Menorah: tongs, a coal pan and “Even HaMa’a lot” (Stone of Virtues). Around it appear the Tablets of the Law, two Hamsas, Kabbalistic words and two inscribed gates. On the lower part appear various verses about which Ramban (Nahmanides) said: “every day ten verses have to be said for the ten Sephirot and they protect from evil…”.
48X36 cm. Fair-poor condition. Missing parchment piece from lower part with damage to text. A small piece is missing from upper margins. Spots, tears and creases. Framed.
