As mentioned in the introduction, the dominant media channels rejected or marginalized the "tempo bands" (lehakot ketzev) which flourished during the 1960s and 1970s in Israeli night clubs (besides Tel Aviv, also in Jerusalem and in Haifa. The main clubs though were in Ramla [Calipso and Karish] and in Tel Aviv Hamasger street). Not much has been written about their place in Israeli music history and their cultural significance, as well as on the reasons for their disappearance from Israeli collective memory.
From an archival point of view, there is no doubt that the collection offered here for sale is rare, as it is one of the only which document the "tempo bands" scene. As opposed to the MB which were shaped by the establishment from above, the "tempo bands" were a local and independent initiative coming from below, from those who didn’t comply with the militaristic ethos, those who were not accepted or preferred not to serve in the MB. At the end of the 1970s the "tempo bands" scene declined and part of its leading figures found their way to Israeli mainstream music.
54 photographs and 16 colored negatives of "tempo bands".
