FRANÇOIS I: (1494-1547) King of France 1515-1547. First King of France from the Angouleme branch. He succeeded his cousin and father-in-law Louis XII. A Patron of the arts who initiated the French Renaissance and attracted Italian artists to France, including Leonardo da Vinci, whose Mona Lisa was bought by King Francis. An excellent L.S., Francoys, a large and bold good example signature, one page, oblong 4to, Paris, 25th August 1521, to Jean de Selve, in old French. The King informs Jean de Selve that the appointment of Jehan Tillet as `Civil Clerk at my Parliament Court..´ has been delayed because of the trial of his brother Seraphin against his person. The King further expresses his annoyment and requests from his correspondent that the matter is promptly sorted out. Countersigned by Nicolas de Neufville de Villeroy. With addressee and contemporary annotation to the verso. Folded, with extremely small pinholes to the left edge, and two very small holes, none affecting the text or signature. A very clean document. Jean de Selve headed important diplomatic peace negotiations in England, as well as the liberation of King François I in Spain. Nicolas de Neufville de Villeroy (?-1549) Counselor of King François I. Jean du Tillet (?-1570) Sieur de La Bussiere, historian and jurist. Clerk at the Parisian Parliament, as well as his brother Seraphin.
