Interesting Letter Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky - "The Steipler" - to Rabbi Zalman Sorotzkin
Lengthy letter [approximately 24 lines], pleasant and interesting, by the gaon Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky - the Steipler, to the gaon Rabbi Zalman Sorotzkin, chairman of Va'ad HaYeshivot. Bnei Brak, 1953.
He sent the letter to 'the administration of Va'ad HaYeshivot, and at their head, the great gaon Rabbi Zalman, gaava"d of Lutzk shlit"a [Rabbi Zalman Sorotzkin, Av Beit Din of Lutzk].' On his official stationery in his capacity as rosh yeshivah of Beit Yosef, the Steipler writes about the 'Beit Yosef' kollel, because despite the avreichim [married Torah scholars] taking part in the morning session at their job (his meaning here is curious), in the afternoon session they diligently study Torah in depth. The letter is very early, and at the time there were very few kollel avreichim. The Steipler continues, "And in truth, how many diligent scholars do we have studying Torah in the suburbs of Tel Aviv, they are few and easily counted, and our entire existence is Torah study." He therefore requests that they be consistently supported: "I hereby sign with a pained heart, imploring and requesting given the above, and await Divine mercy. Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky.
The gaon Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky - the Steipler [1899-1985]a gaon, righteous and sanctified in all his ways and conduct, he was a leader of the Chareidi community, and author of the book series Kehillat Ya'akov on the Talmud. He was a brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish and father of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a. He was a wonder worker who fled honor and authority his entire life, but where necessary, he made his opinion known.
This letter was printed inֲ Kreina D'Iggerta (Bnei Brak, 2011), Part III, letter 1037.
