Autograph of Torah Novellae [4] Pages Handwritten by Rabbi Itzeleh of Ponovezh
Lengthy halachic responsum regarding divorce documents, handwritten by Rabbi Yitzchak Ya'akov Rabinowitz of Ponovezh - "Reb Itzehleh of Ponovezh."
Before us is the first part of the responsum; this responsum was printed at greater length in Zecher L'Yitzchak (siman 20).
Rabbi Yitzchak Ya'akov Rabinowitz, nicknamed R' Itzeleh of Ponovezh, [1854-1919] was the first rosh yeshivah and rabbi of the town of Ponovezh, Lithuania, and rosh yeshivah of Slobodka (1888-1895). He was one of the major opponents of the mussar movement. He was a disciple of the 'Gadol of Minsk' and of the 'Beit HaLevi,' yet most of his Torah wisdom was not learned from any man; he paved his own way and conquered paths in places no one had yet traversed. R' Itzeleh studied b'chavruta with Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik of Brisk, and the two geonim created 'the new process 'המהלך החדש'  - a special path in Torah novellae. His lectures were one of the factors which led to the flow of students to the Ponovezh yeshivah, which was counted among the larger yeshivahs in Lithuania before WWII. His Torah novellae were studied at all the Lithuanian yeshivahs. Heartbreakingly, when the typhus plague broke out in Ponovezh, he devotedly attended to the ill, contracted the disease, and passed away on 20 Adar, 1919. Within a month of his passing, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman was accepted as his successor. The latter initiated expansion of the yeshivah and increase in the number of students until it became the flagship yeshivah. A few of his novellae were printed in Zecher L'Yitzchak and some of this lessons were printed under the name Chiddushei HaGryy"r.
