Lengthy Halachic Responsum Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner
Lengthy halachic responsum by the adjudicator of the generation, Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner, to the gaon Rabbi Binyamin Ze'ev Weiss - Raava"d of Zurich. This responsum was printed in his magnum opus, Shu"t Shevet HaLevi Orach Chaim Part I siman 145.
The responsum deals with the halachahs of matzah baking, regarding the issue of drawing "mayim shelanu" in Switzerland, which is still freezing at the beginning of the spring. Is it permissible to warm the "mayim shelanu" some degrees so that it will be suitable for kneading? Rabbi Wosner raises his hand in his famous genius, bringing sharp proofs beginning in the gemara in Tractate Pesachim through the gaon, the Ya'ave"tz, and until the rabbi of all the Hungarian Jews, the Chatam Sofer. At the end of the responsum, he determines that it is prohibited.
Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner [1913-2015] was born in Vienna, and was the primary disciple of Rabbi Meir Shapira at the Chachmei Lublin yeshivah. Rabbi Wosner ascended to the Land of Israel in 1939 and quickly became famous as one of its prominent Torah scholars. He was appointed rabbi and Av Beit Din of the Zichron Meir neighborhood of Bnei Brak following the Chazon Ish's initiative, a position he held for the rest of his life. In addition, Rabbi Wosner served as the rosh yeshivah of Chachmei Lublin. Rabbi Wosner is considered one of the leading adjudicators of the last generation, and his halachic authority was accepted in all circles, to the point that he earned the nickname "Posek HaDor." He had many Chassidic followers and he was known as a wonder- and salvation-worker with the prowess of his Torah. He authored the Shevet HaLevi series of books, as well as other books.
