Lengthy and Interesting Letter Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Chaim Berlin
Lengthy and interesting letter [4 pages] dealing with Torah thoughts, medical matters, blessings and segulahs, by the gaon Rabbi Chaim Berlin, to Rabbi Chaim Ya'akov Sheftel, author of Erech Malin (Berdichev 1905), who was both a Torah scholar and wealthy. Yelisavetgrad, Ukraine, 1905.
In this letter, with his abundant modesty, the gaon R' Chaim indicates that when he wrote the previous letter to the addressee, he was staying in the Naheim resort town, and he had no books with him there, not even "my father z"l's chumash HaAmek Davar" (reading between the lines we become aware that R' Chaim wrote a complete halachic responsum, without sefarim, from memory only!). Yet R' Chaim, in light of his love for truth, hurried to send the letter before us, in which he wrote "and my memory deceived me ... and when I came home I saw that I was mistaken ... so the foundation fell away, the building collapsed ... and what I said to you before was my mistake, I erred in it." The mistake was, obviously, only one specific detail in the Ramba"m's words. The gaon R' Chaim also writes that the springs in Naheim were good for his health, and adds that zman selichah [the days of Elul] is a time of healing, as it says, "The Forgiver of all my sins is the Healer of all my illnesses." The gaon R' Chaim blesses profusely: "May the upcoming year be fertile and refreshing, good and restorative."
The gaon Rabbi Chaim Berlinֲ [1832-1913] was one of the rabbinic leaders of his generation and one of the glorious figures of Lithuania and Jerusalem. He was the firstborn son of the Netzi"v of Volozhin. Rabbi Chaim Berlin served as the chief rabbi of Moscow, as head of the most famous yeshivah in the world, Volozhin, known as "the mother of yeshivahs," and as Av Beit Din and leader of Volozhin. He ascended to Jerusalem in 1906, and after Rabbi Shmuel Salant's passing, he was recognized for his authority and Torah greatness as rabbi of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem, although he refused to accept the position in an official capacity.
