SCHOELCHER VICTOR: (1804-1893) French Abolitionist Writer. A main figure and spokesman for the abolition of slavery. An excellent A.L.S., `V. Schoelcher´, three pages, blue paper, 12mo, Paris, 20th October 1882, on his printed stationery, to Georges Cloué, in French. The document bears to the upper left corner an attractive embossed heading with his initials. Schoelcher states `Dear Admiral, I will forward your letter to my young friend Mr. Gerville Réache. He would have more than likely amended his speech if he would have known that…´, further referring to slavery in Senegal, saying `You will receive together with this letter an article published in the Rappel where I explain that since Admiral Jauréguiberry, who has unfortunately been appointed at the head of the Ministry of the Colonies, all the orders that you have so worthily given in order to eradicate slavery in Senegal have been overridden!´ Before concluding, Schoelcher states `This is the way your successor works to bring civilization to our African colony..´ A letter of very interesting content. Folded, with extremely small traces of former affixing to the verso of last page. G £400-600 Georges Charles Cloué (1817-1889) French Naval Officer and Politician. Governor of the Martinique 1871-74 and Minister of Navy and Colonies 1880-81. Gaston Gerville-Réache (1854-1908) Politician from Guadeloupe. Disciple and close friend of Schoelcher with whom he co-founded Le Moniteur des Colonies journal. Le Rappel was a French republican journal, published from 1869 to 1933, founded as a result of an initiative proposal of Victor Hugo. Jean Bernardin Jauréguiberry (1815-1887) French Naval Officer and Politician. Minister of Navy and Colonies 1882-83.
