After William Hograth (1697-1764), the portrait of Martin Folkes (1690-1754) which was among others a Trader of antique Books!
After William Hograth (1697-1764), the portrait of Martin Folkes (1690-1754), antique English engraving after the famous Hogarth painting he displayed to the Royal Society in 1741, issued by J & J Boydell, circa end of 18th century. In good condition: few stains, framed under glass in a decorative gilten wood frame, measurements: 35X26 cm. Light flaws to the frame's lower part. The picture he wears a wig and a coat and points in his right hand. Folkes was an antique books trader, a mathematician and British astronomer. Folkes, builder of the Clair College in Cambridge, was a gifted mathematictian to such a degree he got elected for the Royal Society at the age of 23. He served as deputy president of the association under Sir Isaac Newton, and was eventually made president himself in the year 1741, after he was previously defeated for the role by Sir Hans Sloan after Newton's death in 1727. Folkes, like Hogarth, was a member of the Free Masons and director of the Foundling Hospital.
