JOHNSTON HARRY: (1858-1927) British Explorer & Botanist who played an important part in the 'Scramble for Africa'. A.L.S., H. H. Johnston, three pages, 8vo, Queen Anne's Mansions, St. James's Park, London, 8th July 1896, to Sir Edwin [Arnold]. Johnston states that he would have lunched with his correspondent but on the day and hour suggested has to attend a Railway Committee, adding that he hopes the pleasure will only be postponed until he returns in the autumn, and explaining that he is going out of town for a much needed rest although may look in on Arnold at Fleet Street before leaving. Johnston further remarks 'when I am back here & my pictures are up you must bring your Japanese visitor to look at my drawings & you must give me another chance at breakfast with you'. One small spindle hole only very slightly affects a few words of text, otherwise VG Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) English Poet & Journalist, remembered for his work The Light of Asia (1879).
