HOPPNER JOHN: (1758-1810) English Painter. D.S., J. Hoppner, one page, slim oblong 8vo, n.p., 9th August 1806. The manuscript document is a receipt issued to Mr. Molteno for the sum of three pounds 'for two proofs of Mr. Pitt'. With blind embossed revenue seal. Some very slight, extremely minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG The present receipt was most likely made out to Anthony Molteno, the printseller and bookseller of London. Hoppner painted several versions of British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger's (1759-1806) portrait, and the original is considered to have been commissioned by Lord Mulgrave in 1804. Another copy is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London, and a further one was sold at auction in London in 2008 for £36,000.
