Yakov Kuznetsov tried to change the way geography was taught: to eliminate dryness, to make it interesting, to enliven and make sense of it. The author shows the exceptional importance of waterways for the existence of the Russian Empire. The description of administrative divisions and cities is linked to river and sea basins. Physical description of the Russian Empire the author, focusing on river basins and artificial water communications, and the political division of the state - the ocean basins of the Northern, Baltic, Black and Caspian seas. Any city in Russia must be linked to the position in the river basin, because "on the river so-and-so, flowing into such-and-such a river", similar to the older version of localization - "city so-and-so at the river so-and-so". "Short course of geography of the Russian Empire" by Ya. Kuznetsov from 1852 to 1890 was published 14 times, contained more than 2000 items of nomenclature, but no information about the economy of the country. At the same time, the textbook had a simple, accessible and intelligible presentation.
