Efros Gerasim Grigoryevich (1902, St. Petersburg – 1979, Leningrad).
Gerasim Efros studied at the Faculty of painting of the High Arts and Technical Institute (VHUTEIN) in Leningrad where Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was his teacher (1921-1924), and graduated from the Faculty of architecture of this institute in 1929. From 1924 to 1931 the artist cartooned for Moscow and Leningrad satirical magazines such as Begemot, Buzoter, Smehach, Krasniy voron, Lapot', Pushka, Revizor, and Krokodil. In 1933 he joined the Leningrad branch of the Union of Soviet Architects. When preparing their competitive design of the Palace of Soviets in Moscow, the architects Schuko and Gel’freikh invited Efros to design sketches for the bas-relief frieze scenes: The Reaping, Aircraft Manufacturers and Miners. The artist taught the art of drawing at the Leningrad Institute of Construction Engineering and the A. Herzen Leningrad Teacher Training Institute.
