Birstein Max Avadevich (1914, Kiev – 2000, Tarussa).
He studied at the Surikov Moscow State Institute of Arts (1935-1942) under I.E. Grabar, G. Shegal, D. Mochalsky. Influenced by R.R. Falk. Exhibited since 1939. Author of portraits, landscapes, still-life and genre-painting dedicated to the life Russian North in the 1950-1960’th (in 1945-1954 was constantly visiting the White and the Barents Sea, the Northern Dvina, Tundra and Novaya Zemlya). In 1972 won the Prize of All-Union Concourse by the USSR Artists’ Association “My Contemporary”. In 1975 and 1978 was honored with the Artists Union Moscow Branch Diploma “For the best work of the year”. In 199 won the Golden Medal of the Russia Art Academy. In 1968 participated at the exhibitions of the Soviet Artists in Poland, Romania, England, Holland, Spain, Senegal, France, USA, Federal Republic of Germany and Japan. In 1982 a personal exhibition was held in West Berlin, in 1984 – in Moscow, took part at the “Sotbis” exhibition in 1995. Retrospective personal exhibition “Artist’s World” (Central House of Artist, Moscow) was held in 1998. Works of the Artist are kept in many private collections.
