Kardovsky Dmitry Nikolaevich (1866, village Osurovo near Pereyaslavl-Zalessky – 1943, Pereyaslavl-Zalessky).

Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation. Full member of the Academy of Arts (1911). Vladimir Kardovsky studied first in Vladimir, then at Moscow University’s Faculty of Law, simultaneously taking private classes with the architect A. Gunst. In 1892 he entered the Academy of Arts where P. Chistyakov and I. Repin were his teachers (1892-1896, 1900-1902). He also trained at A. Gausch’s and Aschbe’s studio in Munich (1896-1900). In 1903 he became teaching assistant to Ilya Repin at the Academy of Arts. Since 1907 he had a studio of his own. Kardovsky was a painter and a draughtsman, working in the field of book illustration (e.g. for books by Anton Chekhov, Nikolay Gogol, and Alexander Griboyedov) as well as stage design. He was a founding member of the New Society of Artists (1903-1917). A talented instructor, he taught at the Academy of Arts (1903-1918, 1933-1934), and at the Higher Art and Technical Studios, later Institute (VHUTEMAS-VHUTEIN) from 1920 to 1930. V. Efanov, A. Savinov, P. Shillingovskaya, D. Shmarinov, V. Shukhaev, A. Yakovlev were among his pupils. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in a number of regional museums.
