Serov Vladimir Aleksandrovich (1910, Tver Region – 1968, Moscow).
Full member of the Academy of Arts. People’s Artist of the USSR. Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the DDR. The State Prize Laureate in 1948 and 1951. In 1958, he was awarded with the Gold Medal of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR and the Silver Medal of the Universal Exposition in Brussels. The President of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1962-68).
He studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg (1927-1931) at the studio of V.E. Savinsky, and then got a post-graduate course at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, in I.I. Brodsky’s studio.
The artist’s legacy mostly consists of paintings on historical and revolutionary subjects, and of portraits. Serov has created numerous works about V.I. Lenin («Lenin and the Messengers», «In the Smolny», «Winter Palace is Taken Over»).
He worked as an illustrator, created artwork for editions of N.A. Nekrasov’s poem «Who in Russia Lives Well?» (1948-1949), L.N. Tolstoy’s novel «War and Peace» (1951-1953).
First exhibited in 1932. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, in many regional museums.
