Bykhovsky Aleksandr Yakovlevich (1888, Mogiliov – 1978, Moscow).
Originated from orthodox Jewish family. Since 1901 studied under icon-painter Gorbunov. After participating at the revolutionary movement, travel to Turkestan and wandering in the Volga Region studied at the Arts Encouragement Society School in St-Petersburg (failed to complete the course). Participant of the exhibitions since 1913. In 1922 the personal exhibition was held at the “Gabima” theater studio in Moscow. Participated at the “United Art” exhibitions, the “Moscow School Artists Association” (1925), “World Graphics” (Leipzig, 1927). He painted portraits, made miniatures on glass, book covers illustrations for the Commissariat of Education, headed the placards studio, designed the “Culture and Revolution” Magazine illustrated the books by I. Babel, made sketches for the film “Love and hatred” (directed by A. Gendelstein) and the industrial exhibitions design sketches. Since 1940’th started working as a sculptor. Founded the Art Studio named after M. Vrubel, teaching at that himself. Byhovsky was on friendly terms with brothers L.S. and D.S. Vygodsky. Famous psychologist and Art critic Vygodsky dedicated to him one of the book entitled “A. Byhovsky. Graphics”. (1926). The heritage of A.Ya. Byhovsky is kept at the Section of Private Collections of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, where since February, 16 till March, 13 2005 was held the Artist’s personal exhibition. The works being exposed are close to the placard sketch “The Frunze Airokhim Museum” set on the exhibition (1920’th, N. 50 at the catalogue).
