Vinogradov Sergey Arsenevich (1869, Big Salts, Kostroma province - 1938, Riga)

Russian artist, graphic artist and painter, full member of the Academy of Arts. In 1880-1889 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (classes of E.S. Sorokin, V.E. Makovsky, V.D. Polenov, I.M. Pryanishnikov). In 1888, after graduating from college with a large gold medal, he received the title of class artist. In 1889 he entered the Academy of Arts under B.P. Villevalde and K.B. Venig, but later left his studies and became a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. In the late 1880s - early 1890s he served as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts of the artist-architect A.O. Gunst. In 1890 - 1898 he taught at the Kharkov vocational school, in 1898 - 1913 - at the Stroganov School. In 1912 he became an academician of the Academy of Arts, and since 1916 - its full member. During the First World War, he painted posters in support of the Russian army. In December 1923, during preparations for the exhibition of Russian art in New York in 1924, he happened to be passing through Riga, where many familiar artists lived (N. P. Bogdanov-Belsky, K. S. Vysotsky, L. Liberts), his warmth accepted, and decided to stay in Latvia. The artist’s works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, as well as in private collections in Russia and abroad.
