After Velázquez y Silva, Diego, Portrait of Aesop, 19th century Spanish school
Oil on metal plate, measurements: 40 x 25 cm, measurements with frame 44 x 29 cm. The present work was painted to decorate a hunting lodge built on Monte del Pardo, near Madrid, called "La Torre de la Parada". This pavilion later became a valuable museum of paintings where the long series of Ovid's Metamorphoses, painted by Rubens and his assistants, ended up. The pavilion was reserved exclusively for the Court, no one else had access. There the most important collection on themes of mythology and a wide variety of nudes was compiled. Velázquez painted another painting, Menipo, with the intention that both would be exhibited as a pair.
