Manner of Alonso Sánchez Coello (Valencia, c. 1531 – Madrid, 8 de agosto de 1588), Hispano Portuguese Renaissance school of the 16th century
Oil on canvas, 82,2 x 61,3 cm. Framed measurements: 92 x 71 cm. Philippus II (Valladolid, 1527 - El Escorial, 1598) depicted in middle age, in his retirement at the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, wears half armour. The red handkerchiefs tied to the arm as a bracelet distinguishes him as a soldier of the Spanish third in combat, likewise, the red ribbon identifies him as a Spanish soldier, in his right hand he carries the baton. The heraldic shield in cabriolet with a 6-pointed golden star and three crossbows in the upper right corner has not been identified. Provenance: Ballesteros Collection, Madrid.
