Oval portrait of a Young Lady, Raimundo de Madrazo (Rome, July 24, 1841 - Versailles, September 15, 1920), 19th century Spanish school
Oil on canvas, measures 82 x 65, no frame attached. Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (Rome, July 24, 1841 - Versailles, September 15, 1920) was a Spanish realist painter of the 19th century. He was the son and disciple of the famous portrait painter Federico Madrazo, brother-in-law of the no less famous Mariano Fortuny, brother of Ricardo Madrazo and grandson of the notable painter José Madrazo. Today, some of his works are exhibited in the best museums in Europe, such as the Prado Museum. His first teachers were his father and his grandfather. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he had Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes as teachers. Installed in Madrid, he completed his training through trips to Paris, where he went in 1860, being a disciple of the painter Léon Cogniet. He participated for the first time in the Universal Exposition of that same year. He lived in Paris for much of his life, where he married his cousin Eugenia de Ochoa, who died after the birth of his only son Federico, known as Cocó, who also stood out as a painter. He also became a leading figure in the school of Spanish painters in Paris. There he obtained the first medal and appointment to the Legion of Honor for his participation in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889. In 1869 he obtained some cartoons for tapestries by Francisco de Goya, among them Dogs and Hunting Tools, which he donated in 1894 to the Museum. del Prado, its current location. He was related to Mariano Fortuny, married to his sister Cecilia, Martín Rico and Eduardo Rosales. Provenance: Spanish private collection.
