Nicolás Enríquez Nicolás Enríquez de Vargas (1704-1790), Exquisite Virgin of Guadalupe on copper, 17th century, Viceroyalty of New Spain, New Spanish Colonial work
Oil on copper, measurements: 17 x 13 cm, measures with frame: 29 x 25 cm. Provenance: private collection in Madrid (lots 444-448). Nicolás Enríquez de Vargas (1704-1790) was a New Spanish painter, student of Juan Rodríguez Juárez. He was active between 1722 and 1787. He was born in Guadalajara at the beginning of the 18th century. Nicolás Enríquez was one of the best painters of the colonial period in Mexico and was active between 1722 and 1770. Together with José de Ibarra, he founded the Academy of Painting in Mexico City, which was later directed by the Rodríguez Juárez brothers. Enriquez is mentioned on two occasions by the "Gaceta de Mexico", an important publication of his time that refers to the painter's work as magnificent and of very high value, both economically and artistically. One of his most important works are the eight panels of the passion scenes that he finished in 1768. Nicolás Enríquez's work is in important international collections, as well as in the Escuela de Artes Plásticas, Museo Nacional de Historia and the Museo de Guadalajara. Works in comparison: a Guadalupana of the same author preserved in the Blaisten, México.
