"On knives" is a novel by Nikolai Leskov. First published in the journal "Russian Bulletin" № 10-12 for 1870, № 1-8, 10 for 1871. In November 1871, a separate edition of the novel was published. Because of the abundant editing of the editor, the work did not correspond to the original intention of the author, as Leskov himself in a letter to P. K. Schebalsky on October 14, 1871 says: "Yes, more: what does it mean that in the September book there is no end to my novel, which is sent, it seems, in a timely manner? If again that is not to their liking, it was necessary to send a correction, and I would re. I was crushed by this novel, and I hated it as I did not think, thanks to all these qui pro quo".

Trouble with the publication of the novel can be traced in the correspondence of Leskov. In a letter to the employee of the "Russian Herald" N. A. Lyubimov dated November 18, 1870 (soon after the publication of the beginning of the novel), the author is outraged by the arbitrariness of the editorial office: "the most Deadly effect on me is that I can not understand the reasons produced in my novel is not editorial cuts and harmful changes. So, released speech, I have laid the basis for the development of the characters and tasks (e.g., care Foraway bring your husband to God); severely offset by the typicality of the language, replaced by the banal properties (for example, instead of: "don't eat so much meat, how much tooth will repliesi" with the word "lose"), relaxed panache of persons <...>".

In April 1871, Leskov wrote to Schebalsky: "it is difficult not to complain about the editorial office of R<ussky> V<estnik>, because you yourself see that you have to sculpt, and re-sculpt to and fro, and from all this nothing else comes out but annoyance, cooling of energy, irritation, decline of creative forces and, finally, actual absurdities and incongruities such as those that You

Leskov acknowledged P. K. Shemalescom in the same letter: "...I was finishing the novel, crumpling all out, if only to fulfill the program."

The novel was not included in Leskov's collected works, published in eleven volumes in the fifties (M.; L.: Fiction, 1954-1958) for censorship and political reasons.

Dostoevsky conceived a not very large work on the malice of the day, which he planned to finish soon. In the spring of 1870 Dostoevsky wrote about this critic and philosopher Nikolai Strakhov: "the thing that I now write in the "Russian Bulletin", I strongly hope, but not from the artistic and tendentious side; I want to Express a few thoughts, at least at the same time suffered artistry. But I am carried away by what has accumulated in my mind and heart; let a pamphlet come out, but I will speak out."

The "Demons" included parts of the plan of the great novel "the Life of the great sinner", possibly originated in Dostoevsky immediately after his return from exile.
In the process of writing, the idea and plot of the work became much more complicated. The controversy of heroes and ideologues continued the line begun in the novel "Crime and punishment". "Demons" became one of the most significant works of Dostoevsky-a novel-prediction, a novel-warning.
