[Ball Robert Stowell (1. VII 1840-1913) was an English mathematician.

He was born in Dublin. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin (1861).

In 1874-1892 — astronomer Royal of Ireland, from 1892-Professor of astronomy and geometry at the University of Cambridge. The main works relate to the theory of screws. Research in this direction began in 1870. Developing the ideas of G. G. Grasman, he created (1876) the theory of screws. He called the screw axis coated with a cut equal to the parameter of screw, studied various groups of screws in connection with the analysis of the motion of a rigid body with different number of degrees of freedom, opposed (1887) method screws method of Cartesian coordinates. In kinematic geometry, there are known points whose four infinite positions are on the same straight line (ball points).
