OPOYAZ, or the Society for the Study of Poetic Language, is a semi-formal scientific circle created around 1916 by a group of literary theorists and historians (V. B. Shklovsky, B. M. Eichenbaum, Yu. N.Tynyanov), linguists (R. O. Yakobson, E. D. Polivanov, L. P. Yakubinsky), and poetry scholars (S. I. Bernstein, O. M. Brik). V. V. Mayakovsky was associated with OPOYAZ. In general, at an early stage, OPOYAZ focused on the work of futurists, later some OPOYAZ members were part of the LEF, led by Mayakovsky.
