[Andrey Muravyov - Russian spiritual writer, poet, playwright, memoirist, Church and public figure, full state Councilor (1855), Chamberlain (1836), honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1841).
Of the ant family. Brother of A. N. Muravyov, N. N. Muravyov-Karsky and M. N. Muravyov. He received home education under the guidance of the poet and teacher S. E. Raich, tutor F. I. Tyutchev, with whom Muravyov was friends in his youth. In 1822, he was assigned to the Moscow archive of The College of foreign Affairs. In 1823-1827, he served in the military; communicated with future Decembrists.
In 1828, he passed the exams for the course of the law faculty of Moscow University. In 1828-1829, he was a member of the Department of the College of foreign Affairs and was assigned to the diplomatic office of the commander-in-chief of the 2nd army, P. H. Wittgenstein. In 1830, Muravyov visited Egypt, Palestine, Cyprus, and Constantinople; the Synod of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church named him "epitrope (attorney) of the Holy sepulchre" and "knight of the Holy Land".
Although Muravyov's visit was not official, it caused a wide response in Russian society and became an important milestone in the development of Church-political relations between Russia and the Orthodox East. Subsequently, Muravyov was considered an authoritative expert in the Eastern question. He served in the Asian Department of the foreign Ministry (1831-1833 and 1842-1866). Current member of the Russian Academy (1837).
He was chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Russian Church (1833-1842). In 1849-1850, he participated in the creation of the Russian St. Andrew's skete on mount Athos. Muravyov also began raising funds for the restoration of the abandoned New Zion monastery in the city of Mira (Ottoman Empire), which were later used for the construction of the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in Bari (Italy).
By 1860, Muravyov was the epitrope of the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem in Russia, was the ktitor of 2 Athos monasteries, and was in long-term correspondence with the patriarchs of the Orthodox East and other hierarchs of the Orthodox world and Russia. In 1864, he founded and headed the St. Vladimir brotherhood in Kiev with a missionary orientation. After retiring in 1866, Muravyov settled in Kiev, engaged in the restoration and preservation of Orthodox shrines of the city, the revival of Church traditions.
In the 1850s and 1860s, Muravyov was the author of several notes on the situation of the Orthodox Church in Russia, which became known among the highest secular and spiritual figures. In them, Muravyov advocated the independence of the Church from the secular authorities (in particular, for greater independence of the Synod and the gradual reduction of the powers of the chief Prosecutor), a return to the conciliar principle of Church governance and "Apostolic" models for electing bishops. Muravyov was also known for his conservatism in relation to Church canons and liturgical practice.
Thanks to his excellent literary style, Muravyov became one of the first spiritual writers in Russia, whose works were widely distributed in high society and aroused interest in religious and edifying reading. In this way, Muravyov combined "elegant" and spiritual literature in his work; he was the first lay writer to cover theological problems. In addition, the works of Muravyov contain descriptions of the life, customs and religious life of Russian foreigners, valuable facts from the field of archeology, Ethnography and culture of Europe and Asia.]
