In Chinese mythology, a creature like a dragon is a symbol of power, greatness and divine power. He has tremendous energy and controls any phenomena of nature: water, air, fire. For the people of China, it is an object of worship and cult. In Chinese culture, the symbol of the good beginning is yang (as opposed to the European dragon) and the Chinese nation as a whole, strongly associated with the element of water. In honor of the dragon, there is an annual festival of dragon boats.
