In the summer of 1756, the Oryol merchant Akim Maltsov founded a glass factory in the Vladimirsky district of the Moscow province near the Gus river, on the Nikulino estate, in the Shivorovo tract (on the maps of the early 19th century it is marked as the Shivorsky glass factory). In total, there were "74 male and 82 female souls" in the village at the plant. Initially, the plant produced only simple glasses and glasses, but in 1830 the heir to the founder of the plant, Ivan Maltsov, set up the production of crystal, making it no less high quality than the Bohemian one, but cheaper.
For a century and a half after its foundation, the plant has been successfully operating and expanding. In the last years of the existence of the Russian Empire, the heirs of Maltsov not only reconstructed the plant, but also rebuilt a significant part of the city, erecting for the workers the still existing red brick houses, individual cottages for the management personnel and St. George's Cathedral, in the construction of which Leonty Benois and Victor took part. Vasnetsov. Currently, the cathedral houses a crystal museum, which contains many thousands of unique products produced by the Gusev Crystal Factory.
After the October Revolution of 1917 and the devastation caused by it, the plant stopped. It was possible to restart production only in 1923 after Mikhail Kalinin's visit to Gus-Khrustalny and the allocation of special funding to them. In Soviet times, the plant became, in particular, a manufacturer of faceted glasses developed by Vera Mukhina - the plant produced tens of millions of them. At the same time, the plant also produced art glass, including multi-colored glass, glass-blowing masters continued to work there. Also, products were made into which colored Venetian thread was fused.
