The Polytechnic exhibition of 1872 is one of the largest exhibitions of the XIX century in Russia, reflecting achievements in the field of industry, agriculture, transport, military Affairs, science, technology and culture.

The exhibition was dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Peter I. This anniversary of P. I. Tchaikovsky dedicated the cantata specially composed for the opening of the Polytechnic exhibition (the author of the text by Y. P. Polonsky). It was organized on the initiative of the society of lovers of natural science, anthropology and Ethnography (first of all — a member of its Council Professor A. p. Bogdanov) in order to collect the necessary exhibits for the Museum of applied knowledge (the future Polytechnic Museum), which was created on Lubyanka square.

In the preparation of the Polytechnic exhibition was attended by the Moscow branch of the Russian technical society, the Moscow agricultural society, Russian society of acclimatization of plants and animals, the Moscow society for the dissemination of technical knowledge, the Polytechnic society and others, as well as urban management and government agencies. It was financed mainly by entrepreneurs.

The exhibition was held from may 30 to September 1 in the Arena and 86 temporary pavilions and buildings in the Alexander garden, on the Kremlin embankment, Varvarskaya square (architects V. A. Hartman, I. P. Petrov). A horse-drawn railway line was laid along Tverskaya street from Smolensk station to the Polytechnic exhibition. Worked printing house, gas plant for lighting pavilions. About 2 thousand foreign exhibitors (from Austria-Hungary, Belgium, great Britain, Germany and other countries) and more than 10 thousand Russian exhibitors participated. The Polytechnic exhibition consisted of more than 25 departments and a number of private expositions. It presented finished products, all stages of the production process, as well as its scientific support (models, drawings, diagrams, etc.). Demonstrated operating machines (in the Arena), steamers (on the Moscow river), locomotives (on the waterfront), the scheme built and designed Railways, numerous devices, etc.; in the historical Department — portraits of Peter I and his associates, agricultural, industrial products, art objects of Peter's time.

During the Polytechnic exhibition was held reading, debates, lectures, acted in public teacher training courses, gave performances national theatre (Director A. F. Fedotov). The daily newspaper "Vestnik of the Moscow Polytechnic exhibition" (from may 1 to October 16) was published. The exhibition was visited by 750 thousand people. Its exhibits served as the basis for the creation of the Polytechnic and Historical museums.
