Electricity is one of the oldest Russian technical, theoretical, and scientific-practical journals, and one of the first special electrotechnical journals.

It was founded in 1880 on the initiative of outstanding Russian electrical scientists P. N. Yablochkov, V. N. Chikolev (one of the chief editors), D. A. Lachinov and A. N. Lodygin, United in the VI (electrotechnical) Department of the Imperial Russian technical society. It was published from 1881 in Saint Petersburg, and from 1922 in Moscow.

The first editor is major General A. I. Smirnov.

Published to the present day, with interruptions from 1918 to 1921 and from 1941 to 1943.

The first issue of the magazine defined its goals and objectives: "...the development of various issues related to electrical engineering, and the dissemination of the necessary information on the theory of electricity, as well as its application in science and the community. ... The magazine is intended ... to report all the latest inventions in this field at home and abroad ..., to monitor the electrical literature and to give reports on the most important works ...".

The magazine's subject matter changed depending on the development of electrical engineering and electric power industry, the emergence of new scientific directions in these areas, and in accordance with the tasks facing science and technology at different stages of the country's history.

In the USSR, the journal was the organ of the USSR State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on science and technology and the Central Board of the scientific-technical society of energy and electrical industry.
