The newspaper "Modern chronicle" in 1861-1862 was published as an Appendix to the "Russian Bulletin", since 1863 — as an Appendix to the"Moscow Vedomosti".

The publisher and editor is M. N. Katkov.

Articles and notes were devoted mainly to contemporary issues. Since 1863, the content of the "Modern chronicle" is expanding, the newspaper becomes closer to the "Moscow Vedomosti". Here new public institutions, such as Zemstvos and Dumas, which emerged as a result of reforms of the 60s, are exposed to demolition. Much space is given to the protection of the Russian clergy, attacks on the rebellious poles. Many tendentious "letters to the editor" are published, especially from the provinces.

In the "Modern chronicle" there were departments "notes of the theatergoer", "Theatrical chronicle", in which detailed reviews of performances, mainly of the Maly theater, were printed. E. g., in the 39th issue for 1865, 6 pages of newspaper text are devoted to the analysis of the plays of A. N. Ostrovsky "on the brisk place", A. A. Potekhin "the Cut slice" and the play of actors of the Maly theater in Shakespeare's Comedy "A lot of noise from nothing".

Some rooms are almost entirely devoted to art and literature. Among the authors-M. N. Longinov, F. Buslaev and others. In the 32nd issue of 1865, Mikhail Longinov placed a polemical article "What does it mean to "agree"?", directed against the articles of D. I. Pisarev about Pushkin. In the" Modern chronicle "printed" Letters from Eastern Siberia " PA Kropotkin (1863, № 42-45).
