BACKGROUND OF THE ISSUE
Olginsky children's family shelters of diligence-shelters for orphans, existed in the Russian Empire from 1895 to 1917.
   In 1895, to commemorate the birth of the daughter of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, Emperor Nicholas II ordered the establishment of a" shelter for the charity " of orphaned children in the immediate vicinity of St. Petersburg, naming it in honor of St. Olga. This institution was named the St. Petersburg Olginsky Children's Shelter of Diligence. The institution had a charter, according to which children were admitted to the orphanage without distinction of religion, class or rank, but able to work for health reasons. They were taught the Law of God and literacy, agricultural work, mainly gardening, and simple crafts.
   By 1910, there were 36 Olga orphanages in Russia. Only in St. Petersburg alone did they operate:
    St. Petersburg Olginsky children's shelter of diligence in Tsarskaya Slavyanka;
Olginsky children's shelter of diligence on Vasilyevsky Island;
Olginsky children's shelter of diligence in memory of Baron O. O. Buksgevden in Lesnoye;
Olginsky shelter of hard work for children of people who are being treated or who have died in the hospital of St. Mary Magdalene in the Harbor;
St. Olga's Laborious Orphanage on Sredny Ave.;
Olga's Laborious Orphanage for Beggars in Kronstadt.
All institutions were maintained by Trusteeship Societies or Committees, which were under the Guardianship of the Houses of Industry and Workhouses (since 1906-the Guardianship of Labor Assistance). After the October Revolution of 1917, the Olginsky orphanages were liquidated.
     In 2013, the construction of modern Olginsky children's family shelters of hard work, which are family-type housing complexes, began in St. Petersburg. The socially responsible business expressed its readiness to support orphans. One of the construction companies undertook the construction of complexes in Shushary (Pushkin district of St. Petersburg) and in the settlement of Prigorodny (Pargolovo settlement of the Vyborg district of St. Petersburg).
The orphanage in Tsarskaya Slavyanka is "the first of the Olginsky orphanages of hard work. It was established according to the regulations approved by the highest authority on January 31, 1896. It was designed for 200 prizrevaemye of both sexes, aged from 6 years to 15 years for boys and 16 years for girls. It was maintained on the amounts released by the emperor according to the annually approved estimates. To supervise and direct the affairs of the orphanage, a Council was established consisting of a chairman, who was confirmed in office for three years by the emperor, and four members, who acted under the supervision of the Guardianship of the Houses of Industry and Workhouses (since 1906 – the Guardianship of Labor Assistance).
In September 1896, the Main Administration of the shire allocated about 60 hectares of land for the shelter near the Tsarskaya Slavyanka manor, near Pavlovsk. Here, according to the projects of civil engineers M. F. Geisler and B. F. Guslisty, 11 wooden buildings were built - the main building (for the church, the priest's apartment, the common dining room, the office and the Council room), the central kitchen, a house for workshops and employees, a house for girls and minors, three houses for boys for 20 people each, a locksmith and a blacksmith shop, a dairy, a barnyard, a bathhouse with laundry and an engine room. Most of the buildings were one-story, the residential buildings were decorated with carved cornices and architraves, the facades of the main building were made in the Russian style, the church was completely covered with wood, colored glass was inserted in the windows.
The orphanage opened on November 3, 1897 in the presence of the Imperial couple and members of the imperial family. In the first year, there were 15 girls and 99 boys. In the future, 240-280 children a year received charity in the shelter: 130-140 boys and 60-70 girls. Children were trained in the workshops of crafts: boys-locksmith-blacksmith, carpenter-lathe, bookbinding, saddlery and shoemaking; girls-cutting and sewing (sewing linen all prizrevaemyh in the shelter), as well as embroidery, washing and ironing. The Prizrevaemye on the established duty cleaned the rooms, helped in the kitchen and performed all household chores; in the summer they took part in agricultural work in the garden, in the garden and in the field."
