"Ancient and New Russia" (Ancient and New Russia) — historical illustrated monthly magazine (until 1879 — collection). It was published in St. Petersburg from January 1875 to March 1881. He published articles on the history, archeology and Ethnography of the peoples of Russia, documentary materials and memoirs. Significant place was given to the history of culture and life. The Department of criticism and bibliography of the journal published reviews of Russian and foreign works on the history of Russia.

The founders of the journal of the historian S. N. Shubinsky and bibliographer P. A. Ephraim brought the death of their mutual friend who have suffered for far life of the historian M. D. Hmyrov, in 1872. The reason for the rapprochement was the indignation of both historians by the indifference of the publisher of "Russian antiquity" M. I. Semevsky to the fate of their common friend (who was also a friend of Semevsky), deprived of a permanent job in the journal of the latter. This conversation involuntarily led to the idea of creating your own publication. But since neither Shubinsky nor Efremov had any funds for the publication of the journal, the choice of the publisher fell on V. I. Gruzinskogo, officials of the State Bank who had just started a small printing house. In 1873, the idea of a new magazine was supported by many historians, but negotiations with Gracian dragged on for a year. In 1874, the author's composition of the future magazine was finally established, V. S. Kurochkin invented the name "Ancient and New Russia" by analogy with the famous work of N. M. Karamzin and received permission for its publication. Professor K. N. Bestuzhev-Ryumin wrote a Preface to the first issue of the magazine.
