Carlos Paez Vilaro (1923 –2014) was a Uruguayan abstract artist, painter, potter, sculptor, muralist, writer, composer and constructor.
Paez Vilaro was a self-taught artist who in the 1940’s moved into the “Mediomundo” tenement in
Montivideo and became a student of the afro-uruguayan life – the native dances,
funerals, weddings, laundry women, etc. These drawings reflect his respect and
understanding of this vibrant culture.
