Two letters from Rabbi Reuven Katz, Rabbi of Petach Tikvah
Two halachic responses written by Rabbi Reuven Katz. One is dated: erev Shabbos kodesh "sisa" 1948, and relates to "v'takatem al oloseichem." The second is dated erev Shabbos "Vayechi" 1959. Both were written and signed in his hand.
Rabbi Reuven Katz [1880-1964] was the author of Shu"t Degel Reuven. He studied by the Chofetz Chaim in Radin [at the age of 15]. A year later, he transferred to Yeshiva Knesset Yisrael in Slobodka and was known as the "genius from Olshan." In 1897, he joined the nucleus of students that founded Slutzk, where he studied for a few years under the tutelage of Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer. At different periods, he studied in Kovno and Kelm to learn mussar from R' Itzele Blazer. In 1903, he moved to Vilna to study by Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski. He received smicha from Eliyahu Baruch Kamai [Rabbi of Mir], R' Elazar Rabinowitz [Rabbi of Minsk] and R' Mordechai Rosenblatt [Rabbi of Slonim]. In 1923, he published his first volume of Shu"t Degel Reuven and he was appointed rabbi of Stawiski. In 1932, he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and accepted a position as rabbi of Petach Tivkah, a position he maintained for over thirty years. He also headed the Lomza yeshiva in the city.
