A Rare Set: 'Chikrei Lev', Seven Volumes. First Editions. 1787–1832
The monumental work of the "Rishon LeZion", Rabbi Yosef Raphael Chazan (also known as "HaYerech" and "HaChakal").
"Chikrei Lev" is a comprehensive collection of halachic inquiries and commentaries organized by the order of the Shulchan Aruch, authored by the Gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Yosef Raphael Chazan, who served as the Chief Rabbi of Izmir and Jerusalem. This rare set of seven volumes includes the core of his renowned halachic writings, printed over 45 years in Salonika and Livorno. Later volumes include additions, sermons, and commentaries on select tractates.

1. "Volume I:" "Orach Chaim." Salonika, 1787 ("Takmav"). [2], 281 leaves. Includes approbations from Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi and Rabbi David Pardo.
2. "Volume II:" First part of "Yoreh De’ah." Livorno, 1794 ("Takn'd"). [1], 339 leaves.
3. "Volume III:" Second part of "Yoreh De’ah." Salonika, 1806 ("Taks'v"). [1], 156 leaves.
4. "Volume IV:" Third part of "Yoreh De’ah." Salonika, 1806 ("Taks'v"). [1], 190 leaves. Likely includes the title page for the second part.
5. "Volume V:" "Even HaEzer." Salonika, 1813 ("Tka'g"). [1], 189 leaves.
6. "Volume VI:" Part I of "Choshen Mishpat" with responsa. Salonika, 1817 ("Tka'z"). [2], 275 leaves.
7. "Volume VII:" Second part of "Choshen Mishpat, " including questions and halachic responses. Salonika, 1832 ("Tka'b"). [2], 176 leaves.
Volume A: Good condition. Stickers on the title page.
Volume B: Good to very good condition.
Volume C: Good condition. Stains, mainly towards the end. Slight wormholes.
Volume D: Good condition.
Volume E: Good condition. Wormholes, mainly in the last pages.
Volume F: Good condition. Slight wormholes.
Volume G: Fair condition. Numerous wormholes.
The Gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Yosef Raphael Chazan (1741–1821) was born in Izmir and became a leading rabbinical figure, eventually serving as the "Rishon LeZion" and Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel.
- Rabbi Chazan was well-versed in both revealed Torah and Kabbalah. His immense scholarship gained him respect across Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities, and even disciples of the Vilna Gaon turned to him with halachic inquiries.
- His writings include the sermons "Ma’arei Lev" and the halachic masterpiece "Chikrei Lev, " which spans eight volumes in its original edition and thirteen volumes in later expanded editions.
- Known for his rigorous standards in halachic observance, he issued halachic rulings across the Jewish world. His brilliance was matched by his strict adherence to Torah law, as evidenced by tales of his firm stance against transgressions.
- On his tombstone on the Mount of Olives, the following is inscribed: "The heart of the righteous, an angel of God, a crown of Torah and a crown of renown, the great rabbi, our master and teacher, Yosef Chazan, of blessed memory."
Condition: Seven volumes in total. Printed on blue and white paper. Overall, the volumes are in very good condition, with minimal wear and tear given their age. Some minor tears on page edges have been repaired professionally.
