A deed of will validation for the late R' Shraga Feivush HaCohen (Katz), signed by the dayanim of Jerusalem, including Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Rabbi Uri Shabtai Salant, and Rabbi Binyamin David of Vilna. Jerusalem, Cheshvan 5612 [1851]. An early and rare legal document.
The first page contains a detailed account of the deceased's will, declared on his deathbed, signed by two witnesses and the testator himself.
The second page features the rabbinic ruling, affirming the validity of the will, signed by the dayanim of Jerusalem: Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Rabbi Uri Shabtai Salant, and Rabbi Binyamin David of Vilna.
Rabbi Shmuel Salant (1816–1909) – The revered rabbi of Jerusalem for approximately seventy years, and leader of the Ashkenazi communities in the Land of Israel. A child prodigy renowned for his genius and sharpness, he was invited to Jerusalem in 1841 to serve as its rabbinical authority and leader of the Perushim community. He established educational and charitable institutions, founded the first organized Beit Din in Jerusalem, and solidified the Ashkenazi community's foundations in the city. He was known as a preeminent halachic authority, possessing profound wisdom and a prodigious memory. Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, in his approbation to Aderet Shmuel (Jerusalem, 2014), describes him as:
"The genius of Israel, whose renown spread across the world, celebrated for his wisdom and Torah, as the sage of the Jewish people, with unparalleled strength in halachic ruling, unique in his field, and renowned for his immense holiness."
Rabbi Uri Shabtai Salant (born c. 1800) – Born in Oshmiana, Lithuania, to R' Chaim. He immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1830 (approx.). A son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant, he was one of the first dayanim appointed by his brother-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, when he established the Jerusalem Beit Din in 1841. He was one of the founders of the Talmud Torah in the Hurva Synagogue of Rabbi Yehuda HeChassid. His wife, Henia, daughter of Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant, passed away one day after her father’s death, on 4 Cheshvan 1866.
Rabbi Binyamin David of Vilna (1813–1893) – Son of R' Shmuel of Vilna, he immigrated to Jerusalem in 1839 and was one of the first members of the Jerusalem Beit Din founded by Rabbi Shmuel Salant. He served as a dayan for many decades.
