ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON MOTHER OF GOD IN SILVER RIZA
An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox icon of Mother of God with Jesus Child in Tikhvinskaya iconography. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is enclosed in an 84 Silver riza or oklad, a protecting case with engraved details, covered with enamel in wgite, blue, red and turquoise shades. Hallmark of 84 silver standard, a makers mark, and other marks. Inscribed in Church Slavonic, lower to the center. Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons that is said to be one of the icons written by St. Luke the Evangelist. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where eventually Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded to host the icon. Religious Christian Collectibles, Russian Icon Painting.
