2 Volumes of the Shulchan Aruch of the Chazon Ish – the Copies from which He had Studied and on which He had Handwritten His Halachic Comments – with Drops of Wax from the Candle in whose Light He had Studied – a Unique Item! 125 Lines in His Handwriting
Before us are two volumes of the Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, which were printe din Vilnius, 1859. From these copies, Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, th e"Chazon Ish" had studied day and night. During his study, he wrote on them several of his halachic instructions.
A holy item! 125 lines handwritten by the Chazon Ish.
It is a great privilege to see such an item, which reveals the exceptional figure of the Chazon Ish, a world-renown genius who was named by the masses after his series of books the "Chazon Ish". The two volumes before us can teach us about the Suggiyot the Chazon Ish found worthy to comment on.
The Chazon Ish did not write the series of books of the "Chazon Ish" in a systematic order; rather, he used to write his novellae down during his study. When there was enough material for printing the novellae, his brother-in-law, rabbi Shmuel Greinman, edited them and prepared them for printing. The comments of the Chazon Ish on Orach Chaim were printed in his book the 'Chazon Ish' during the years 1911-1923 in Vilnius.
However, the glosses and comments that appear on the two volumes before us were not printed in his book. Only in recent years they were printed in the book "Zachor Le'Avraham", 1993, by Rabbi Yehoshua Gross (pp. 201-203).
In addition to his handwritten glosses on the volumes, we can see another unique testimony of the book being studied by the Chazon Ish: on page 260 there are two drops of wax from the candle in whose light the Chazon Ish used to study!
The Chazon Ish studied and wrote novellae on even the smallest detail of the Torah. From his youth, even before he was seventeen years old, until several days before his death, he used to write down his novellae and halachic rulings.
At a certain stage, the books were given to his brother-in-law, Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky, the Steipler, and he studied them and even added his comment as will be specified later.
The Suggiyot about which the Chazon Ish wrote his Halachic comments are the following:
[p. 56, Siman 38] the laws of Tefillin: 43 lines.
[leaf 45] Ervat Katan regarding the matter of prayer: 28 lines.
[p. 198 Siman 183] the laws of Hafsaka Bi'Vrachot: 18 lines erased by a line [in the printed version, they were put in parentheses] and six more line.
The laws of Passover: a short reference (one line).
[p. 172 Siman 518] the laws of Muktzeh: 17 lines.
[leaf 30 Siman 451] the laws of Melaben: 18 lines.
It should be noted that the Chazon Ish saw some of these Suggiyot as highly significant to the public, often because they were degraded; that is why he calls to be stringent with them. This is the reason he chose to comment on very specific Suggiyot, leaving many empty leaves between them without comment.
The gloss of the Steipler
After the Chazon Ish studied the books and wrote his comments on them, they were passed on to his brother-in-law (his wife's brother), the Steipler, Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Kanievsky, who also used them for his studies. This is indicated by a handwritten gloss by him, on leaf 135, the laws of Sukkah, Siman 637.
This gloss ends with the words: "All this is omissions of the censor". That is, the Steipler added sentences about heathens, which were omitted by the gentile censor. This gloss in 18 lines long.
The Steipler was very close to the Chazon Ish and the two used to discuss halachic matters at length. It is told that once, the Steipler came to the Chazon Ish at a late hour of night to ask something and was amazed to see the Chazon Ish immersed in his study with a kind of crown of light encircling him.
When he died, the only person who was present was the Steipler.
After the Chazon Ish's death, the Steipler became the leading rabbi of the Lithuanian community of Bnei Berak. He continued the customs and halachic rulings of his brother-in-law.
Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz author of "Chazon Ish" (1879-1954) was a halachic genius, great Torah scholar, Tsaddik and holy man. He published his first book "Chazon Ish", on Orach Chaim, in 1911. The book was published anonymously' yet even since, he was named after it.
After World War I, he lived in Vilnius. Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, who recognized his unique greatness, forced him to become a public leader. When the Chazon Ish immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1933, Rabbi Grodzinsky used to send his many questions about leading the religious community of the land of Israel. He became the senior leader of the Haredi community of the land of Israel and marked the way of the Torah world after the establishment of the State.
