"My Sister and I" 2019
Oil on canvas
30/40 cm

Yana Stup (1983), a native of the former Soviet Union, lives and works in the Rehovot. She studied art and painting in various private settings (1995 - 2010) and among them with the artist Eran Webber (2016 - 2017). Art History Studies at the Open University (2007-2009)
Most often engaged in figurative painting in oil on canvas. Another body of her works is a combination of a technique mixed with engraving and stamping on metal (of the clay type). These works consist mainly of inverted metal plates and are sewn by hand with the help of wax thread. Some of the works are painted on canvas in a mixed technique combined with a gold pigment. In her works one can see images and texts from her diaries over the years in which she describes autobiographical places with a traumatic tone and additional questions around gender and multicultural identity.
The narrative that is created from my works is of a girl, women and animals who have no ability to speak and express themselves. From the motif of a fish-girl that I deal with a lot to a woman from whose mouth a bald tree and a hunting deer grow - all of these symbolize types of silences and silences.
Another important characteristic of my work is the intense color. As a girl in the Soviet Union the exterior landscape was completely snowy and white compared to the interior of the house which was full of warm and intense colors due to the use of hardwood flooring, colored textiles and various decorative elements with a dominant presence. This color also connects to the fact that I draw from memory and not from "living" observation, so the colors do not come to describe academically what is in front of me, but conveyed memory, experience and emotion.
