“In answer to his letter from 20th of Tammuz in which he writes about his daughter’s health situation…and the opinion of the doctors, some of whom recommend surgery of the hand, and it is unclear in his letter if this is the opinion of one doctor or of many doctors…these surgeries are of a type which do not really affect the nerve of the patient, they say it is an easy kind, because of extra care not to hit nerves (here the Rebbe writes by hand in Yiddish the word “nerven”), and arteries (muscles) for movement…it would be right to check the additional opinion of the psychologist…whether it lies in the power of thought and imagination…”. Here he adds that the matter must be clarified in all aspects, and he demonstrates familiarity with psychological and medical terms. At the end he connects it to a discussion of hashgacha pratit and hishtadlus. Signed by hand by the Rebbe.
