Dementiy Shmarinov is a people's artist of the USSR, laureate of the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR. Studied in Кiev in the studio of N. А. Prakhov (1919—1922) and in Moscow at the Studio of painting and drawing of К. P. Chemko under D. N. Kardovsky (1923—1928).

Known mainly as an illustrator of Russian and foreign classics. Author of magazine and newspaper drawings (since 1923), book artist in publishing houses "Goslitizdat", "Detgiz", "Моlodaya gvardiya" (Young Guard) and others. (since 1927), "Iskusstvo" (Art) (1941-45). His works are characterized by the realistic accuracy of the pictorial interpretation of literary works, the persuasiveness of the transfer of dramatic situations and the socio-psychological characteristics of his characters. Head of creative graphics workshop of the Аcademy of Arts of the USSR (1962—1966). Professor. Academician of the Аcademy of Arts of the USSR (1953), member of the Presidium and academician-secretary of the Graphics department of the Аcademy of Arts of the USSR (с 1957). Corresponding member of the Аcademy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic (1970). Member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Artists (since 1967), honorary member of the Union of Artists of GDR (1975).
