Kuniyoshi (1797- 1861) a Japanese Kuniyoshi was born in Edo, the son of a dyer. From early childhood, the boy was well versed in the ornaments of artistic fabrics and showed a deep interest in the fine arts. At the age of 12, Kuniyoshi created his first drawing, depicting the legendary demon slayer with a sword in his hands. Many believe that it was this work that brought him to the workshop of Utagawa Toyokuni, the most respected and popular master of that time. Kuniyoshi, at the age of 15, became a student of the great master. At school, he begins his independent activity with illustrations for works of fiction.
