Bijin-ga (Jap. 美人画) is a general name for paintings and drawings depicting female beauty in the traditional art of Japan, such as prints from wooden boards of the ukiyo-e art movement, which was a kind of precursor to photography. The designation "bijin-ga" can thus also be used for contemporary art media, representing the classical image of a beautiful Japanese woman, usually dressed in a kimono.
Almost all ukiyo-e masters created paintings in the bijin-ga genre, which was one of the central themes of this trend in Japanese art. Among the artists who created bijin-ga, such masters of form and innovators in Japanese painting as Hishikawa Moronobu, Kitagawa Utamaro, Suzuki Harunobu, Toyohara Chikanobu, Torii Kiyonaga, Nishikawa Sukenobu, Itō Shinsui, Kaigetsudō Ando should be mentioned.
