More details
Elena Yanson-Manizer. Ballerina, 1963, H. 40 cm, bronze, Collectible condition.
In the 1990s, the grand opening of a monument in honor of Ulanova took place in Stockholm. This was the first and only monument to a Russian person abroad, erected during his lifetime. “Why Ulanova?” – journalists asked the President of the UNESCO Commission for International Dance, Bengdt Hegger.
“Galina Ulanova is the highest height in art, ” he replied. “She’s not just a brilliant ballerina – there are many brilliant ones in the world.” Her greatness lies in the fact that in our very cruel age, like no one else, she showed us how beautiful simple natural human feelings are - goodness, truth, beauty.”
During the opening of the monument, the hero of the occasion herself stood nearby and tried not to look at herself in bronze. When the camera lens was pointed at her, she hid her face in the fur of her collar or simply retreated behind someone’s back, stubbornly repeating: “The monument is not for me, but for ballet.”
